Church at Home – Sunday 21st February

Dear Friends

Welcome to the Church at Home pack for the first Sunday of the New Year.

Our reading today is Mark 1:9-15, and the theme is Baptism and wilderness.

Order of service

Opening prayer

We come together to meet with God. Let us recognise his presence with us.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Prayer of confession

Lord Jesus Christ, we confess we have failed you as did your first disciples. We ask for your mercy and your help.

Our selfishness betrays you: Lord, forgive us.

Lord have mercy.

We fail to share the pain of your suffering. Lord, forgive us.

Christ have mercy.

We run away from those who abuse you: Lord, forgive us.

Lord have mercy.

We are afraid of being known to belong to you: Lord, forgive us.

Christ have mercy.

The Lord enriches us with his grace, and nourishes us with his blessing; the Lord accepts our prayers, and absolves us from our offences, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Saviour.

Mark 1:9-15

Guide me O thou great Redeemer

You may like to pray for the following:

  • Those you know who are struggling with the ongoing restrictions on our lives.
  • Any situations that you have heard of in the news recently, and for which you want to pray.
  • Those you are aware of who are suffering, through illness, frailty or sadness.

And/or use the Prayer time notes on the church website.

Finish by saying the Lords Prayer:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever.  Amen.

The blessing of the God of life be ours.
The blessing of the loving Christ be ours.
The blessing of the Holy Spirit be ours.
To cherish us, to help us, to make us holy.

Let us go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ, Amen.

Questions to Consider

Some questions that you might like to consider or discuss:

  • Reflect on your experiences of being in the wilderness – both physically and spiritually. What have you learned?
  • What do the two stories in our reading – the baptism and the temptation in the wilderness – tell us about the nature of Jesus’ mission?
  • How can you reach out to people you know who are in a desolate place at the moment?

‘Coffee and Chat’ time….

A ‘Coffee and Chat’ Zoom Meeting will start at 10:15 for 10:30am on Sunday. More details are available on the St John’s Facebook page and in the note sent to church members.
